A City That Is Vibrant - Main Streets And Local Economic Development

Commercial streets like Queen, Kingston, Gerrard, Danforth, O’Connor and St. Clair are foundational to our neighbourhoods and our home in the city. When our commercial streets and the local businesses that define them suffer, our city suffers. The city needs to explore innovative approaches to keep our retail areas vibrant and successful through new initiatives and incentives, and working with BIAs and neighbourhood groups.

As your Councillor, I will:

  • Expand city support to local business owners for new and existing Business Improvement Areas.

  • Reinvest funds from the cancelled Vacant Commercial Unit Tax Rebate to support innovative projects, incentives and other approaches to keep business on our main streets, and to help them adapt to climbing property values and re-development.

  • Extend the reduction of speed limits from 40 km/h to 30km/h in our neighbourhood village centres to ensure all road users can stroll, cycle, drive and shop safely on all commercial street areas.

  • Extend the TTC Community Bus to other local, small business areas like St. Clair E and Beach Hill.

  • Use strong property standards enforcement to maintain properties in a good state of repair and stop the deterioration of vacant properties.
